About the project
Makro Gonubie opened in April 2025. It is the retailer’s second store in the Eastern Cape and serves Gonubie, East London and Mthatha. The building uses cement brick construction, on‑site water storage, backup power and an integrated CO₂ refrigeration and HVAC system. Over 140,000 m³ of soil were moved to prepare the site, generating almost 1,700 construction jobs.
