About the project

La Cité du Fleuve is a large urban development launched in Kinshasa by developer Hawkwood Properties, a subsidiary of a London-based investment fund. The concept is to reclaim land from the Congo River in a marshy zone near Kingabwa, in the Limete commune, to build an upscale new city. With a projected cost exceeding one billion dollars, the project received Congolese government approval in May 2009. It was designed to be delivered over about ten years in three phases: land reclamation, infrastructure servicing, then construction of apartments, villas, offices and shops. Positioned in the luxury segment, it aimed to provide a modern, secure riverside lifestyle. Delivery has, however, faced significant difficulties, including delays, disputes between investors and flooding. It remains one of Kinshasa's most emblematic and widely reported developments.
